Maxene Johnston

Founder and President,
Johnston and Company

Maxene Johnston, as Founder and President of Johnston and Company, brings to the firm more than 25 years of combined management makeovers, turnaround, executive search and entrepreneurial experience in nonprofit organizations, government, business, healthcare and philanthropy. Ms. Johnston works with organizations facing challenges to their ability to provide services to their communities. She is a noted expert in helping nonprofits; in particular, transform themselves by establishing and implementing the necessary strategies, plans and resources to evolve to the next level. She has also built a successful track record in Executive Search by creating Signature Search Services that have been responsible for bringing talented professionals and leaders to a variety of organizations, particularly in the health and human service industry.

Prior to forming Johnston and Company, Ms. Johnston was a Partner and Vice President with national and international search firms. Formerly, she held the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of the Weingart Center. There, using the break-through thinking that has become the trademark of her considerable business personnel and problem solving techniques, she created from financial and social near-ruin one of the most entrepreneurial, innovative and comprehensive transitional housing and customized health and human service centers in the country.

From her senior level administrative positions with Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, the 1984 Olympic Organizing Committee and the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, Ms. Johnston brings an extensive background in evaluating business strategies and management candidates. By combining such varied disciplines as business, public policy, health care, administration and anthropology, together with outstanding skills and experiences, Ms. Johnston has developed a unique perspective and problem-solving techniques for addressing changes in today's demanding human service sector. Moreover, she has concentrated specifically on creating a successful approach to executive recruiting and growth management services particularly for non-profit and public sector organizations.

Ms. Johnston has authored many papers and articles, opinion pieces and contributed chapters in several books in her field. Her work and efforts on behalf of the community have been recognized with numerous awards and citations.

Patricia Carlile
Patricia Carlile, President and founder of Carlile Consultants, Inc., has more than 20 years of proven success as an executive search and management consultant. Ms. Carlile began her search career with the international consulting firm of Arthur Young, conducting human resources consulting assignments and health care searches. She later became a partner of an international executive search firm, Leon A. Farley Associates, and opened the Washington, DC office.
In 1982 she formed Carlile Consultants to assist corporations and associations in developing executive teams. Her search experience covers most senior management positions, which includes CEO's and the positions that have a direct reporting relationship to the top executive. Client industries include: construction, health care, information technology, management consulting, manufacturing, trade and charitable associations, as well as the Federal government.
Ms. Carlile has served in several senior level positions in the Federal government. For the Reagan White House she directed the recruitment of executives from private industry to Presidential appointments in the Departments of Agriculture, Energy, Health & Human Services, Transportation, and Treasury. In addition, she was responsible for filling the senior positions in over a dozen independent agencies, such as the SEC, Federal Home Loan Bank Board, Export-Import Bank, Farmers Home Administration, Amtrak, and the Maritime Administration. She also assisted the Nixon Administration in recruiting energy executives to the newly formed energy agency, which she helped establish.

Abigail Jaye
Abigail Jaye has been a consultant, associate and researcher in the field of retained executive search for 15 years. She has lead recruitment efforts for many companies and organizations in healthcare services, education and the not-for-profit sectors. In addition, she has worked on searches for entertainment, media and Internet businesses, real estate and consumer goods. Ms. Jaye's wide network of contacts, familiarity with resources and tools both on and off-line and thorough knowledge of search methodologies combine with her creative problem-solving skills to bring clients an excellent and diverse slate of candidates. A native of Los Angeles, Ms. Jaye is a graduate of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Barbara Bradley
Barbara Bradley brings 30 years of management experience in healthcare settings prior to joining Johnston and Company in 1997. She has in-depth experience in recruiting and staffing for a wide range of positions. Working closely with managers at all levels, Ms. Bradley became a leader in applying advanced human resources management practices particularly in integrating volunteer personnel in agency programs.
As a leader in professional associations, Ms. Bradley became familiar with the needs and objectives of a wide range of human service agencies and nonprofit organizations. She has served as a trainer for resource managers covering a wide range of topics including: recruitment, screening and performance evaluations; development of position descriptions; volunteer-staff relationships; professional ethics; and record keeping.
Ms. Bradley's skills in research, candidate identification, screening and development are essential elements of the Johnston and Company team. Ms. Bradley is a graduate of Purdue University.

Associates

Wanda Kilbourne
Wanda Kilbourne has 14 years experience in retained executive search at A.T. Kearney, Ward-Howell and Boyden International. Ms. Kilbourne has performed searches for marketing, finance, manufacturing, engineering, human resources and information technology executives across a broad cross-section of industries.
Ms. Kilbourne is highly skilled at electronic and Internet research and specializing in developing precisely targeted candidates, thoroughly screened for experience and interest.
Ms. Kilbourne has a BA from Arizona State University, and an MBA from Pepperdine University.

Barbara Sullivan
Ms. Sullivan is a former human resource director and currently provides education and training to corporations in a variety of human resource and employee development areas. As a search consultant, she works on research, outreach and candidate identification particularly in the African American communities.

Diana Peterson-More
Diana Peterson-More, a labor lawyer and seasoned corporate executive, left a Fortune 200 Company to launch The Organizational Effectiveness Group ("OEG") in 1995. Drawing upon her 15 years as a human resources executive and executive officer, Peterson-More's Company focuses on human resources strategies and organizational development systems that support strategic business goals. In response to client request, in 1998, Peterson-More founded HRO on the GO, a full service, outsourced, retainer-based human resources consulting firm.

Before joining Times Mirror, Ms. Peterson-More spent 11 years with the Southern California Edison Company and SCEcorp. There, she served as a labor lawyer, and human resources and health care executive, prior to being elected Corporate Secretary in 1989. Peterson-More received her Bachelor of Arts degree in history from UCLA and a Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School. As an undergraduate, she studied a year abroad in Madrid, Spain.

Research Associate

Norma Jacobs
As a Research Associate, Ms. Jacobs background includes over 30 years of experience in management and leadership positions in public education, healthcare, community organizations and volunteer service administration. Ms. Jacobs management positions include work with LA County-UCLA Medical Center and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services.
Ms. Jacobs background in the nonprofit world, and years of working with recruiting and training challenges in small and large organizations, allow her to approach search assignments with creative, resourceful and savvy solutions as a valuable member of the Johnston and Company candidate research and development team. Ms.Jacobs is a graduate of The University of California,Los Angeles.

Robert Rakoci
Robert Rakoci has more than 20 years experience as a corporate human resource manager. He has an extensive background in recruitment, training and compensation plans. His human resource work includes industries such as retail, manufacturing and engineering.
